The Week That Was #2019-11

It has been a fairly uneventful week-and-a-bit during which I have been going to work in a semi-holiday state of mind. April is definitely the slow period as far as education in Thailand is concerned as it is the summer vacation between school years. As the Thai New Year — Songkran — comes mid-month, most businesses close up shop as the entire country attempts to relax. I still have a few lessons each week with individual students as well as a business course on Saturdays but it is a very relaxing atmosphere at the moment.  My agency will actually close down completely from this Saturday (April 13 is “official” Songkran Day) and will reopen next Wednesday. My student has already cancelled his Friday evening lesson (which happens to coincide with our payday), so I will start holiday festivities early. I do have some tentative plans for the long weekend but I will report on those in next week’s update, hopefully with some photos and video.

A Good Start to November

Reading-quotes-3November is shaping up to be a much better reading month than either October or September, or even August for that matter.  No, I haven’t finished a single book yet but I have started several that are all gripping in their own ways.  I’m averaging around 60 pages a day and am confident that I would read more if I wasn’t working so much (and trying to get caught up on other things in the limited amount of free time that I do have).

I did hit a milestone of sorts recently, surpassing 100,000 pages read since I started tracking my daily reading totals at the beginning of January 2010.  More than 24,000 pages have been in 2014, my best showing yet and there are still two months left!  In that same amount of time, I’ve finished 404 books.  Thus, my reading goal for 2015 will be to finish my 500th book.

Reading Log #8: February/March 2014

imageI have been reading a lot this year (so far), having completed 36 books and read over 10,000 pages in just the first three months.  In my best year (2011) since starting tracking my reading in detail, I read 21,601 pages so I am well on-track to shattering that record.  Will I beat 2010’s total of 119 books finished?  Only time will tell…

The February pages read total of 2726 is down almost a thousand from January but the March stat of 3699 is back up there.  What’s particularly amazing is that the bulk of my reading for this past month occurred in the first twelve days; once I purchased my new laptop (having been without for almost a year), my daily reading took a significant drop.

Reading Log #7: January 2014

imageThe new year is off to a spectacular start and I had the best reading month since I began keeping track four years ago.  While the total of 15 books finished in January is not the most I completed in one month (that honor goes to October 2010 with 19 books), I read more book-pages than any single month before now – a total of 3774!  The next closest for that stat would be the 2752 pages I read in March 2013.  Quite a leap!

Reading Log #6: December 2013

imageThe New Year of 2014 is off to a busy start.  I’ve spent most of the last week substitute teaching in one of Phuket’s largest municipal government schools in addition to working at two different language schools. My schedule hasn’t allowed as much time for reading as I would like but I have still managed to finish one book this month and another is nearing completion.  I may need to read shorter books if I want to meet the goals I’ve set for myself this year!
