The 12 Days Of Christmas Stamps 2014: Day 3 – Greenland & Iceland

Greenland issued their 2014 Christmas stamps on 20th October.  Designed by Lisbeth Karline, the kr 10 and kr 11,50 stamps depict images from a popular annual television special called “Christmas Greetings to Greenland.”  The stamps are sold in a booklet of twelve with a total face value of 129 Danish krona.

Karline’s comments about the stamps, and Christmas in Greenland, were including in the press release announcing this issue:

“There is nothing better than the show ‘Christmas Greetings to Greenland’. Once the DR’s Big Band rolls over the screen, the Christmas mood is spreading. We see friends and acquaintances in the show which sends greetings to the North. When the Aavaat choir is singing, then it goes straight to the heart. For me, ‘Christmas Greetings to Greenland’ is about remembering the year that has passed. Time passes sometimes so quickly – so it is just great to get an hour to reflect on who I miss, what I am thankful for and who I spend Christmas with.

To Christmas belongs the good old-fashioned postcard – together with a Christmas stamp. E-mail and Facebook are just not the same as receiving a Christmas card from someone who is close to one. With these stamps, I hope that you will be happy to send mail to people you care about, no matter where they are in the world. Merry Christmas and loving greetings”.

On 6th November, Iceland released their own 2014 Christmas stamps.  The three-stamp issue portrays scenes taken from the Icelandic Book of Drawings, depicting the Nativity of Jesus, the Adoration of the Magi and the Annunciation of Mary.  The book contains model drawings collected during medieval times.  Thirty-six such medieval books of templates have been found in Western Europe but the Icelandic Book of Drawings is the only one known to have been preserved in the Nordic countries.

Regardless of your religious affiliation or the manner in which you celebrate (if at all) the Christmas season, I hope you are enjoying a look at the beautiful art created on these bits of paper we call postage stamps. If you would like to spread a little holiday cheer and send me a postcard or letter with a nice Christmas stamp affixed, I’d be very appreciative.  My mailing address can be found below.

Happy Holidays!
